Community, solidarity or the peaceful coexistence of population groups and nations: current topics that have been values since the foundation of the SPAR Academy Vienna and are an integral part of the curriculum.
On its way to becoming the “Ambassador School of the European Parliament”, it was – among many other measures – expanded to include EU-specific learning content. The certificate was recently presented in a ceremonial setting at the SPAR Academy in Vienna, in the presence of Federal Minister of the EU and the Constitution Karoline Edtstadler.
The aim of the “European Parliament Ambassador Schools” program is to inspire young people about the European Union and increase awareness about democracy. The program is available throughout Europe. The application process involves the implementation of many different criteria, including in-service training for teachers, the appointment of school ambassadors, the cross-curricular implementation of comprehensive EU content in lessons, the organization of an event in the run-up to Europe Day and embedding it in the school development concept .
Practical learning based on current topics
What is inflation, how does inflation come about and what do the ECB’s key interest rates and international supply chains have to do with it? These and many other topics that could not be more topical are integrated into the economic topics of the SPAR Academy Vienna. In the third year course ‘Political Education’, almost the entire second semester is devoted to the history and development of the EU. Topics are also discussed such as the different EU institutions and their areas of responsibility, current and future member states, the importance of the monetary union, EU subsidies and EU financing and much more.
Junior ambassador – lived involvement
One of the criteria for certification is nominating junior ambassadors. Their task is to represent the students of the SPAR Academy Vienna in matters relating to the European Union and to support the teachers and school management in all EU activities.
SPAR Academy Vienna
With 2,700 apprenticeships for 24 apprenticeships, SPAR is the largest private apprenticeship trainer in Austria. In Vienna, the Academy has operated a private, state-recognized vocational school with public rights since 2000. About 350 students from 34 countries and ethnic groups, speaking 29 different native languages and belonging to 13 religious communities, are currently being trained at the SPAR Academy in Vienna. In 2017, the surface area was tripled to almost 2,000 square meters and ten million euros were invested.
In the states, SPAR trains students in its own SPAR academy classes in selected public vocational schools. Some of the additional training is also possible in the federal states. SPAR therefore offers training that goes much further than a normal internship in the food trade.
