Balance 2023 – Salzburg airport is catching up enormously in terms of passengers

Date:

The hard times are over, but they still leave their mark. This is evident from Salzburg Airport’s balance sheet for the previous year. The big unknown is the contamination of groundwater by fire-fighting foam in recent decades.

Director Bettina Ganghofer of Salzburg Airport can breathe a sigh of relief given the figures presented on Wednesday. The major Corona dent with only 300,000 passengers must be overcome soon.

“Last year we handled approximately 1.61 million passengers. This corresponds to an increase of 31.3 percent compared to the previous year,” Ganghofer reported at a press conference at the airport. They are gradually returning to pre-crisis levels of 1.84 million passengers and are targeting around 1.66 million for the current year.

“Research at the beginning”
The pandemic has also left its mark on the workforce. Despite retirements, there were no replacements due to the crisis at the time. You felt that in the company. “We have now filled almost all vacancies,” says the general manager.

Last year, with a consolidated net profit of around 3.4 million euros, more than six million euros went to investments. The big unknown for the future is the remediation of contaminated sites. During firefighting exercises, the groundwater around the airport was contaminated with PFAS firefighting foam. Bettina Ganghofer says about the extent of the renovation: “The research here is still in the early stages.”
