It is not only during the holiday period that train passengers have to contend with overcrowded trains. In the future, they will at least be entitled to compensation if they are not allowed to travel because the carriages are full, just as they would be if a connection were to fail completely. The problem is getting worse, because last year the railways in Austria transported a record 328 million passengers, an increase of more than eleven percent compared to 2022. On average, they each covered 44.3 kilometers – also a historic high, according to the supervisory authority Rail Control. The existing trains are not always sufficient for this crowd and the frequent disruptions, especially in German rail traffic, are also affecting us.
