Ramadan decorations, bathing days for women, driving license tests in Turkish: the SÖZ (seven district councils) program has it all
There was great excitement when it was recently announced that an Islamist party had been founded in Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria) that wanted to run for the National Council elections in the autumn of 2024. Islamist parties are now on the rise all over Europe. Would such a movement also succeed in Vienna? For example, in the Vienna elections in 2025?
Nine years ago, the list ‘Together for Vienna’ (GfW) tried to enter the city hall. The Turkish party failed miserably at the time; it only managed to get 0.91 percent of the votes cast. The migrant party quickly disappeared into oblivion as a result.
As a result, the group “SÖZ – Social & Ecological” was created. In the 2020 state elections in Vienna, the party already achieved 1.20 percent. As a result, it missed out on entering the city council. However, with a total of seven mandates, SÖZ achieved six district representations. in. Two district representatives – including party chairman Hakan Gördü – won the group’s favor.
Since then, she has attracted attention there several times with controversial demands: for example, a Ramadan decoration in the 10th district and separate “women’s bathing days” in the Amalien Bath.
The proposals have always caused great resentment and irritation among the population. There is also support for driving license tests in Turkish. Will the political platform be active again next year? SÖZ did not respond to a corresponding request from the “Krone”. So it remains exciting.
