A candidacy in the SPÖ member survey requires 30 statements of support by Friday – the party decided this under pressure from most countries. In an interview in “ZiB 2”, federal director Christian Deutsch was convinced that this number was sufficient to prevent nice candidacies.
Deutsch once again made it clear that the member survey is only one „Collection of a picture of the atmosphere”. “The result cannot be an obligation at all”, Deutsch emphasized on Monday evening. The member survey was of great importance, the actual proposal for the party chairmanship would be worked out by the election committee.
30 supporters show ‘anchoring in the party’
It’s not an election, “that’s why there are no candidates”. The party leadership is not elected by the members. In addition, the rules or minimum requirements for the candidate for the presidency of the party have not changed, the federal responsible explains, “because the procedural provisions were only decided today”.
The SPÖ did not expect that there would be 73 applicants for the position, he admitted. But with the 30 statements of support that you have to hand in by Friday at the latest, you prevent fun candidacies, he is convinced: “It shows that you are in the party.”
In response to loud demands that he himself resign, Deutsch said: “You can never please everyone.” Would he also serve challengers Hans Peter Doskozil and Andreas Babler? “The question won’t come up,” says Deutsch. The party leader can choose the federal director himself.
