What did the talks between the three parties with the most votes, FPÖ, ÖVP and SPÖ, yield? Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen is currently being informed about this by party leaders. Herbert Kickl is the first person to be invited to the Hofburg. He arrived shortly after 1:30 p.m.
“Everything on time,” the host responded to questions from journalists about what expectations he had from the conversation with the FPÖ leader. After a short greeting and a quick photo together, the two disappeared behind the red wallpapered door. In addition to his laptop, Kickl also had a blue box with him. Nothing is known about the contents.
After Kickl, Karl Nehammer and Andreas Babler have to go to the head of state. After the meetings with the party leaders, Van der Beleln must set the course for the next cabinet. There are signs of cooperation between the ÖVP and the SPÖ. A statement from the Federal President is not expected afterwards.
Only clear conditions with the NEOS?
After the elections for the National Council, Van der Bellen had already emphasized that he wanted to ensure clarity and stability. Therefore, the two mentioned parties will likely need a third party in the alliance – this is where the NEOS have emerged in recent weeks.
On the occasion of the SPÖ party committees on Monday morning, Babler did not want to comment on the progress of the talks. He is waiting to see what steps Van der Bellen will take next. Whether it should go towards the opposition or the government was only answered on the sidelines of the Presidium by the Upper Austrian regional leader Michael Lindner. The SPÖ’s goal is to improve people’s living conditions: “This will only be possible with government participation.”
