Two years of war: how Putin cashes in on gas in Austria

Date:

The war in Ukraine has been raging for two years now, but Austria still gets almost all its gas from Russia. This not only makes us the absolute exception in Europe, but we also pay extra. New data analyzes show that gas imports from Russia in 2021 and 2022 were noticeably more expensive than those from other countries.

NEOS analyzed data from foreign trade statistics and found a significant price increase; in some months Russian gas even cost twice as much. “The ‘cheap Russian gas’ was always a myth and a propaganda lie of Gazprom and its lobbyists,” said NEOS energy spokeswoman Karin Doppelbauer, calling on the federal government to take measures to phase out Russian gas.

At the start of the war two years ago, it seemed virtually impossible to phase out Russian gas, but a lot has changed since then. An end to gas imports from the war-torn country is possible. Walter Boltz, former board member of E-Control, explains in an interview with ‘Krone’ how this works.
