Loudly cheered during the pandemic, now often the first point of complaint due to high product prices: It’s not always easy being an employee in the food retail sector. Krone+ looks at one of the country’s most important industries and shows what warehouse workers, cashiers, branch managers etc. earn at local giants Spar, Billa and Co.
The latest price survey by the Chamber of Labor in Viennese supermarkets (Billa, Billa Plus, Spar, Interspar) and discounters (Hofer, Lidl, Penny) clearly shows the tense price situation for consumers: the micro shopping basket in question consisted of 40 cheapest food products and some cleaning products were on average 1.9 percent cheaper in the period June 2023 to June 2024 and fell from 73.78 euros to 72.34 euros. However: Since September 2021, the shopping cart has still increased in price by a whopping 41.5 percent as a result of the general wave of inflation!
