“Making the beauty of fashion accessible to everyone” – this is the resolution that the Chinese fast fashion retailer Shein has made. With success: Hundreds of thousands of packages with cheap fashion from the Far East now reach Europe every day. However, some price advantages have a high price: with your own health.
Shein – Founded in 2008, the company has, through aggressive expansion and advertising, grown from Guangzhou, China, to a global enterprise with approximately 11,000 employees worldwide in just a few years. Last year, the company, now synonymous with fast fashion and whose rock-bottom prices make even established competitors like H&M and Zara seem expensive, generated approximately $24 billion in revenue.
With great power, however, comes great responsibility. Shein says it is committed to “using materials with lower environmental impact and preferred performance characteristics that meet high quality and safety standards to protect both people and the planet.”
At least that’s what the company’s website says, but there still seems to be a big gap between promises and reality…
