Local hoteliers can be happy, there is another record number of overnight stays in the first half of the summer. Compared to the previous year, an increase of 0.8 percent to 39.94 million overnight stays was achieved from May to July. This is the best result for the period May to July since 1980.
Statistics Austria calculated on Wednesday that guests from abroad accounted for 70 percent of overnight stays.
Just a small setback in July
In July 2024, 18.67 million overnight stays were recorded in Austria, which corresponds to a decrease of 0.7 percent compared to July of the previous year.
Increases from the Netherlands, excluding Germans
An analysis by country of origin shows that overnight stays of guests from Germany, the Czech Republic and Belgium decreased. Increases were registered in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
It was only in the pre-Corona year 2019 that the number of overnight stays was exceeded since the beginning of the year
From the beginning of 2024 up to and including July, 94.44 million overnight stays were counted, 1.17 million (1.2 percent) more than in the same period last year. “Since the start of the statistics, more overnight stays (95.10 million) were only reported in this period in 2019,” the statisticians said. A total of 27.38 million guests arrived (plus 2.9 percent), with 19.07 million guests coming from abroad and 8.31 million domestic travelers.
For State Secretary for Tourism Susanne Kraus-Winkler (ÖVP), the overnight figures are “a clear sign that the price-performance ratio of a holiday in Austria is still good for Austrians too”.
It points to a clear trend towards holiday apartments: in the entire summer season of 2013, there were 3.5 million overnight stays in commercial holiday apartments, while in 2023 this number had already reached 8.6 million. However, three-star hotels recorded a decline of 2.6 percent in the current summer season.
