Calling Employees – Musk: Ambitious Twitter Plans and a Mega Lawsuit

Date:

In a video conference with Twitter employees, Tesla boss Elon Musk spoke of the need to “rationalize the number of employees” in the event of his planned takeover of the SMS service. The billionaire, who joined the call ten minutes late and joined via smartphone, also explained his ambitious plans. He wants to increase the number of users per month to “at least a billion” and is thinking of functions based on the Chinese service WeChat. Why Tweet? “I love Twitter,” said Musk, who is being sued for $258 billion by a cryptocurrency investor.

Musk did not provide details about the planned acquisition with a volume of $44 billion (€42.18 billion). During the question-and-answer session, Musk also spoke about aliens (“I haven’t seen any real evidence of aliens yet”) and his belief that Twitter should help “civilization and consciousness,” among other things.

‘Tesla makes cars and you don’t build cars from home’
According to one participant in the call, Musk said he “loves Twitter” after being asked why he was interested in the company. “I’m learning a lot from Twitter” and “It’s a great way to get your message out there,” according to CNBC. Contrary to his views on working from home at his company Tesla, he may want to do things differently for Twitter employees: While he didn’t provide any details about working from home, he did say, “Tesla makes cars and you can’t build cars from home.”

“If you’re contributing something important, don’t worry”
Asked about layoffs, he said it depends on the financial situation. “The company needs to get healthy,” Musk says, “right now costs are higher than revenues.” Without a “certain rationalization,” Twitter couldn’t grow. But no one who contributes anything important to Twitter needs to worry. After the call, there were – probably referring to – the first memes from employees in which they labeled themselves as “extraordinary”.

He doesn’t care whether he becomes CEO, according to Musk. It’s not about titles, but about steering the product in the right direction. And he has big plans: not only does he want to increase the number of active users per month from about 229 million to “at least a billion”, he apparently has a counterpart to the Chinese WeChat in mind. According to CNN, he wants to improve monetization capabilities for developers and explore possible payment features.

WeChat seems to be the direction Musk wants to take on Twitter
He wants to get as many potential users to Twitter as possible. WeChat is “so easy to use and helpful in everyday life,” Musk said. It would be an “immense achievement” if Twitter “came even close to that”. In addition to exchanging messages, video calling or sharing information, WeChat allows users to pay restaurant or electricity bills, look for jobs, book doctor’s appointments, or apply for visas to the US. However, there are growing voices against WeChat that the service is being used to spy on users and censor the internet.

The employee’s appeal came amid the turmoil surrounding the $44 billion deal and was intended to allay employees’ concerns about whether Musk is really taking the acquisition seriously. Last week, Musk threatened to pull out of the deal if Twitter stopped releasing more details. The billionaire doubts that Twitter is correctly reporting the number of fake user accounts.

Observer: Musk tries to push purchase price down
Twitter shares fell more than two percent in later trading, but outperformed Tesla: the paper for the world’s largest electric car maker was down ten percent. Many observers assume that Musk is trying to lower the purchase price.

Dogecoin Investor Sues Musk for $258 Billion
Incidentally, the content of the $258 billion lawsuit is the claim that Musk had set up a pyramid scheme for the cryptocurrency Dogecoin. Musk and his companies Tesla and SpaceX drove up the price of digital money and then crashed it, according to a memorandum filed Thursday in federal court in Manhattan on behalf of Keith Johnson. “The accused have known since 2019 that Dogecoin has no value, but still promoted Dogecoin to profit from its trading.” Musk used his status as the richest man in the world to “trade the Dogecoin for profit, attention and entertainment.” and manipulate pyramid schemes”.
