To protect US national security, insiders expect a proposal from the US Department of Commerce on Monday to ban Chinese software and hardware in connected and autonomous vehicles from US roads in the future.
The ministry plans a 30-day reflection period to discuss a corresponding arrangement, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.
First bans expected in three years
The corresponding bans on software could therefore go into effect starting in model year 2027, and bans on hardware could go into effect in January 2029. The Department of Commerce declined to comment on the matter.
The US government is deeply concerned about the potential collection of data on drivers and infrastructure by Chinese companies, as well as the potential manipulation of connected vehicles from abroad.
