Ribera admits cutting VAT on electricity “doesn’t solve the problem”

Date:

The minister is committed to “accelerating major changes of major significance” given that the rise in electricity prices will continue over time

Barely two days after the president of the government, Pedro Sánchez, announced that on Saturday, within the new anti-crisis royal decree, he will approve another cut in the VAT on electricity from 10% to 5% to try and save a little electricity bill that continues to rise, Third Vice President and Minister for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, came to amend this measure, acknowledging that “tax cuts have not solved the problem”.

Another of the minister’s admissions during her New Economy Forum breakfast speech is that price tensions will continue over time and that is precisely why she has distanced herself from “immediate measures” such as tax cuts and opted for “major measures”. accelerate changes of major importance”, such as changes in the energy market and continue to promote renewable energy sources.

Ribera gave no indication of what new measures Saturday’s anti-crisis decree will contain, but he did make it clear that these will be the measures “most relevant to accompany families”. In turn, he pointed out that they are working to make the deployment “as flexible and broad as possible”, while respecting, yes, socio-economic, environmental issues… In any case, the vice president emphasized that they are “extremely careful ” will be. and “will apply everything in our power” to alleviate high electricity costs.

Ribera showed more passion than for lowering the VAT on electricity for the limit on gas that has just come into effect, but has not been able to contain the high prices for the time being. However, he insisted on praising this measure which he considers “extremely positive” and crosses its poor results into the “difficult scenario”, with a heat wave not seen since at least the early 1980s, of which he trusts that assumption will see more price cuts soon.
