Governors – Black West Axis breaks: only Haslauer left

Date:

Vorarlberg’s head of state is now retiring in Tyrol. This means Governor Wilfried Haslauer is the last of the trio still in full office. The political tenor from Salzburg: matters still need to be clarified.

It was considered a strong, black western axis in Austria: Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg usually acted as a common voice in Vienna. But after the head of state of Tyrol, Günther Platter, announced his resignation, the governor of Vorarlberg, Markus Wallner, follows suit. He cites health problems as the reason. Officially, he wants to return to the political scene in a few weeks. Of the trio, only Salzburg state boss Wilfried Haslauer, who declined to comment on Wallner, is still fully committed.

Clarification must continue
The reactions in Salzburg to Wallner’s failure have one thing in common: everyone sends the West best wishes for recovery. But after the resignation of ÖVP provincial governors Hermann Schützenhofer (Styria) and Platter, the break has an aftertaste. “It’s a strange photo and hopefully not an excuse to pull your head out of the noose because of the affair,” said SPÖ boss David Egger, wondering how long Haslauer will stay?

Another calls out Marlene Svazek (FPÖ): “You have to wonder how long things will go well in Vorarlberg, even if Wallner comes back. Everyone knows that politics is a burden.” Simon Heilig Hofbauer (Greens) believes that the topic of health among politicians “must finally be freed from taboos.” For him, however, Wallner’s withdrawal should not be the end of the enlightenment in the Wirtschaftsbund-Causa.

NEOS boss Andrea Klambauer sees that Wallner has exhausted himself recently. “Politics must become more open, cleaner and fairer.”
