The German government is again calling for an alarm level for gas. The German Ministry of Economic Affairs confirmed this on Thursday. The reason is the reduced gas supply from Russia and the persistently high prices. At the moment, however, the security of supply is still guaranteed.
After the first of three warning levels had already been announced, the second level of the gas emergency plan followed on Thursday. “The situation is serious,” German Economy Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) said in Berlin. “Stopping the gas supply is an economic attack on us.”
“We are in a gas crisis”
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s strategy is to fuel uncertainty, drive prices up and sow division. “We are in a gas crisis. Gas is now a scarce commodity. Prices are already high and we have to brace ourselves for further increases.”
The top priority is now filling the gas storage tanks. Alternative providers would be sought and renewable energy sources would be expanded. In addition, more gas must be saved.
The alarm level is the second of three levels of the gas emergency plan. Until now, the early warning level applies. The highest would be the emergency level.
