No sweet is as trendy as Dubai chocolate. The delicacy filled with pistachio cream and crispy dough strings is currently in high demand, and not only in retail.
Wholesalers are also faced with high demand. There is more demand for pistachio cream than ever, says Pascal Walch, director of dessert wholesaler JM Posner. He currently sells six tons of the cream he produces in Spain every week.
Purchasing restrictions necessary
“We have seen that there are more and more of them and have increased production accordingly,” reported the director of the company based in Straubenhardt near Pforzheim, Germany. About two months ago, production was increased from 600 kilograms to 6 tons per week – a tenfold increase. At first the dealer was laughed at because of this. “And yet it is not enough.” Given current demand, ten tonnes could be sold per week.
Purchase limits were introduced so that customers would not hoard the cream. “You can’t buy more than four buckets online.” Sometimes he is offered higher prices for the cream over the telephone. Walch reported that he would not agree to that.
“As soon as Dubai is mentioned, people buy it”
The pistachios for the cream came from Sicily. The director reports that buyers include bakeries, dessert manufacturers and private customers. Even before the chocolate trend in Dubai, the demand for pistachio cream had increased: for example, the product was used to fill croissants. “Overall, we sold significantly more this year than the year before.”
The pistachio cream is not only used for homemade Dubai chocolate. “Many people also make Dubai tiramisu, Dubai ice cream or Dubai cheesecake, there are many variations.” “As soon as it says Dubai, people buy it.” And he doesn’t mean that derogatorily. “If it says Dubai, people know what to expect and they try it. It is similar to other flavors.”
Metre-long queues
Dubai chocolate owes its rise to Instagram and TikTok, where it is a big topic. Since then, the chocolate has caused long queues and hundreds of euros in resale on the internet. A bar costs about 15 euros in the store.
The chocolate originally comes from the company Fix Dessert Chocolatier, which has been selling it in Dubai since 2021. In Dubai the chocolate costs the equivalent of around 16.60 euros.
