Last week the René Benko affair reached a new dimension. The Public Prosecution Service in Trento, Italy, has applied for a European arrest warrant against the founder of Signa. The bankrupt billionaire will from now on be careful not to travel south via the Brenner Pass. As the “Krone” shows on the basis of documents, two state governors are also in the middle.
As reported, the anti-mafia authority suspects that Benko is the head of a criminal organization. The suspects deny the charges and are presumed innocent. In addition to Benko, at the center of the investigation: are South Tyrolean Governor Heinz Peter Hager, 65, head of Signa Italia and CEO of the Laura Private Foundation. According to insiders, behind this Benkos foundation lies a shadowy world in which significant assets are still hidden away that could make the construction of a ‘Signa 2.0’ possible.
