Strabag hopes for a water project in Great Britain. In a consortium with the British company Equitix, United Utilities (UU) has initially been selected as the preferred bidder for the modernization of a 110 kilometer long water supply system in the northwest of England.
The estimated construction costs are 2.5 to 2.9 billion pounds (currently 3.01 billion to 3.49 billion euros), according to a press release from the domestic, listed company.
Decision in the first half of the year
Strabag, or more precisely its subsidiary Strabag UK Limited, hopes to actually receive the order together with the UU in the first half of the year. The major project aims to secure drinking water supplies in Cumbria, Lancashire and Greater Manchester in the North West of England for future generations.
Large parts of the UK infrastructure are considered dilapidated and the new government is trying to ‘fix’ many things. The local construction company could benefit from this.
Line from the fifties
Strabag and the UU will implement the so-called Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Program (HARP). This is a concession project. The Haweswater Aqueduct is a 70-mile pipeline that runs from the Lake District via Lancashire to Greater Manchester. The line, originally built in the 1950s, needs to be fundamentally modernized, with the existing tunnel sections replaced to ensure long-term supply to consumers, Strabag’s press release said. The UU provides wastewater services in the area.
According to Haselsteiner, Strabag is growing steadily in Great Britain
Strabag boss Klemens Haselsteiner spoke of some ‘milestones’ that the British subsidiary had already achieved in recent years, coupled with ‘steady growth’. Implementing the new order would be “an important step in our expansion plans” with the subsidiary.
The contract includes the planning and construction, as well as the financing and maintenance of six tunnel sections of the pipeline. The construction phase will last eight years, followed by another 25 years of maintenance. Strabag UK Limited will be responsible for the overall design and construction of the project, while financing will be provided by Equitix and the Strabag Group.
Strabag worldwide, purchased in Australia
In Friday’s broadcast, Haselsteiner also highlighted his group’s activities “globally” after there were problems for the company in Russia due to the war against Ukraine, related sanctions and the company shares of Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska. In any case, Strabag recently purchased a local company in Australia that was mainly active in road construction – or is awaiting final approvals for that.
