The Austrian food trade sold 2.6 percent less wine between October 2023 and September 2024. At the same time, the demand for non-alcoholic and low-alcohol wines increased, as Austria Wine Marketing GmbH announced.
Furthermore, domestic wines significantly outperformed foreign wines when it came to supermarket sales. In September 2024, 5.8 percent less foreign wine was purchased and sales fell by 2.3 percent in price. The trend of preferring local wines started before the Corona pandemic.
The majority of consumption in 2023 came from catering and events (56 percent). About four in ten wines were consumed in households, five percent were consumed by tourists and migrant workers.
Export to Germany
According to Österreich Wein Marketing GmbH, exports are becoming increasingly important. In 2023, 248 million euros worth of wine was exported to Germany. However, last year the value fell by 5.1 percent in the first three quarters. For the whole of 2024, exports to Germany are expected to be slightly weaker than in 2023.
The fact that non-alcoholic and low-alcohol wines are increasingly used is mainly due to younger target groups. Red wines will be advertised more and more in the future.
