Chocolate becomes a luxury goods. The increase in cocoa prices and the high costs of energy, packaging and transport meant “that the production of our products is still much more expensive,” said chocolate manufacturer Mondelez on Thursday. For some varieties, the packaging sizes shrink now
“As a result of this difficult environment, we had to make the decision to adjust the weight of part of our Milka, both in De Standaard and in the large table segment.” The company therefore confirmed a report from the German ‘food newspaper’.
Changes “only if it is inevitable”
The measure includes the varieties of Alpine Milk, Noisette, Zartherb and White, the content of which is shrinking from 100 grams to 90 grams. The weight of various large shelves is also reduced from 270 grams to 250 grams. In some varieties such as Dark Milk, Luflée or Oreo Sandwich, the content was previously emphasized on less than 100 grams.
Other chocolate manufacturers such as Lindt & Sprüngli or Knight make the packaging sizes the same, but run the price screw. The cocoa prices on New York raw material exchange had risen by 161 percent last year. In mid -December they increased to a record of $ 10,100 (around 9700 euros) per ton. Already in 2023 the cocoa prices increased by 70 percent.
