Meeting Tuesday – gas storage fell sharply: ‘The situation is serious’

Date:

The gas storage facilities in Austria are currently not filling up as quickly as hoped. As the responsible ministry of climate announced on Friday by Leonore Gewessler (Greens), storage in Austrian storage facilities has “decreased significantly” since Tuesday of this week. She released an assessment of the situation by the federal government for next Tuesday. According to the first analyses, the reason for the low injection rates is the high gas exports from Austria to Italy.

“The situation is serious. It is important that we analyze the causes carefully. On Tuesday we will decide in the federal government on possible further steps. The top priority is always the safe supply of households and social services,” Gewessler said in a written statement on Friday.

On March 30, Austria declared the early warning phase, the first phase of the three-phase gas emergency plan. Germany announced the warning last week after Russian state-owned company Gazprom cut deliveries to Europe, including via Nord Stream 1, in mid-June.

The Gewessler department responsible for energy issues said on Friday that the early warning phase involved “extensive emergency preparedness and close monitoring of gas supplies”. The government’s goal is to fill the storage tanks to 80 percent before the start of the heating season. “Should this target be compromised, the alert level will also be declared in Austria,” the ministry said.
