According to industrial commissioner Stéphane Séjourné, the EU wants to protect the local steel industry against low -East with a reduction of import rates.
From April the import quota will be lowered with a number of steel species, according to Séjourné at the Reuters news agency on Wednesday. This would reduce the entry by around 15 percent.
The EU committee is planning to present an action plan for the heavy industry in Wednesday.
Industry with players such as Voetalpine in Austria or Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe and Salzgitter in Germany is struggling with high energy costs and cheap imports.
The manufacturers also fear that customs steel from China has flooded the European markets in the US in the US.
