Leading Slovenian gas wholesaler Geoplin has confirmed that it will lease gas storage facilities in Austria. However, the company was silent on the exact capacities: “For many years we have been renting storage capacities in neighboring countries, including Austria, for commercial purposes and to deal with possible ad hoc supply interruptions,” the company said.
The gas wholesaler has a market share of 70 percent in the gas supply in Slovenia. However, at APA’s request, the company was silent about the size of the leased Austrian capacities. The details of the bilateral agreements are confidential, it said. According to the business newspaper “Finance”, Geoplin rents gas storage facilities in both Austria and Croatia.
25% of the company is directly owned by the Slovenian state. The largest part of the gas supplier, about 74 percent, is owned by oil company Petrol, in which the state in turn owns about 32 percent.
