In the last months of the crisis, many compatriots lost their family income. In the first quarter of 2022, 35 percent of 16- to 69-year-olds reported a drop in income from the previous 12 months. On the other hand, every fifth person announced income gains. Statistics Austria announced this on Tuesday.
More than every third person in Austria has suffered a loss of income in the past year. 36 percent of those affected attributed this to factors such as short-time working, lower income or job loss. 21 percent said current inflation is the main reason for their lower incomes.
Financial problems for low-income people
Almost half of the people with a net income of less than 1000 euros indicate that they suffer from loss of income. 13 percent of all approximately 800,000 adults surveyed in Austria found it “difficult” or “very difficult” to use their household income to cover their current expenses.
Of the people with a net income of less than 1000 euros per month, a third of the respondents indicate this. Another third in this income bracket said they had “some difficulty” making ends meet.
Some Austrians also have holiday planning problems this year. In total, 23 percent find annual vacation unaffordable at the moment. At 48 percent, this was almost half of those surveyed among low-income earners.
