The discussion about increasing retirement age is not new. Given the budget, the government tries to dampen the increase in growing pension costs. But there is a central question: is the Austrian population healthy enough to work longer?

Although some professional groups can work longer, it is a huge burden for others. Dr. Gerhard Klicka, professional psychologist and head of the IBG consultancy, innovative company Health Management GMBH with 200 employees, provides insight into why a differentiated image is necessary according to professional fields and which solutions companies and legislators should find.

Everyone who has worked hard for years has a shorter life expectancy
The first question is whether the health of the Austrian population is good enough to be able to cope with a higher retirement age. Klicka: “This cannot be answered in general. It depends strongly on the industry, the location and the type of activity. Some professions do not allow longer work. Everyone who has physically worked physically has a shorter life expectancy – it is not reasonable that these people have to work outside the regular pension time.”

According to Klicka, there are also many jobs in which long work is fairly feasible. Klicka: “It looks different in professions with low physical stress, for example in science or in management. There is nothing against longer work and many people work already after retirement age.”

The expert also gives some examples: “We have doctors who are still fully employed by more than 70 years. I know some cooperation partners in the federal states who see it in the same way – not for financial reasons, but because they find their work as meaningful. That is why the planned tax reductions of the government for further work for further work are very welcome.

Whether someone works physically or mentally, makes a big difference
But what can a differentiated image of professional groups look like? “This will be a matter of Gretches.
