180th birthday – How a family gets the old Miller -trade

Date:

There are almost 20 active mills in styria – and a particularly traditional empire is in Fehring. De Berghofer -Molen is run by three sisters who want to keep the historic vessel alive. For the 180th birthday, the “Krone” visited the house on the Raab.

Here in the old walls in Fehring is the smell of freshly ground flour in the air. The soil from the wood of your own forestswiel while walking, the historic mill devices rattle. And in the middle of it Liane Berghofer is: “The grain is crushed 18 times to the completed flower,” she explains.

Together with her two sisters, she maintains a centuries -long vessels. Today the Berghofer family is the last active part along the Raab-it is now led in the sixth generation and celebrates its 180th anniversary. “Everyone goes with us,” De Styrian proudly explains. The three sisters sometimes had completely different life plans: one teacher, the other tax adviser – the third master Miller. In 1999, Liane, Diana and Isabella Berghofer took over the company when it was about to be terminated.

But from the beginning: in the 12th century the mill was first mentioned in a document. In 1845 she walked in the possession of the Berghofer family and was operated with wooden water wheels. When a fire destroyed parts of the infrastructure in 1915, they switched to a turbine including a generator, so that electricity could soon be produced for the electric lighting of the whole of Fehring. Until then there were only petroleum lights.

In 1945 the great setback: shortly before the end of the Second World War, the mill was completely destroyed. An annoying reconstruction began, which has remained until today. Shortly before he took over the three sisters, the so-called Molenquotum fell with the Austrian EU TOTREDING-A hard blow for regional companies.

“The large industrial mills exceed us with their prices and quantities,” says Berghofer. And so the three shareholders decided to reconsider the concept: the previous oil and grain mill became an adventure mill, including a shop, online store, tours and baking courses. However, once or twice a week is the land for the surrounding bakeries. And the seventh generation – Liane Berghofer’s son Franz Erwin – is already in the starting blocks.
