Concerns about a gas market collapse are mounting in Europe. Prices are skyrocketing, emergency plans are being made everywhere and alternative energy sources are being sought so that people are no longer so dependent on Russian natural gas. German Economy Minister Robert Habeck remains confident and reassured: the gas supply will be secure. However, he is preparing the population for an extremely expensive winter.
The price increases in the fall and winter 2022/23 would be “in the four-digit range per household. And that can also be a monthly income for a family.” According to the Green politician, saving remains the order of the day.
In order to save gas in view of the limitation of Russian supplies, less gas has to be used to produce electricity – instead, more coal-fired power stations have to be used again. The Bundestag is expected to vote on the relevant legislative changes late Thursday evening.
In view of an impending total shutdown of Russia’s gas supply, Habeck emphasized on ZDF on Wednesday evening: “We are not just passive. We should not be surprised at what is happening there.” After all, security of supply could also be maintained in Germany despite a 60 percent reduction in gas supply.
