And again there are descendants in the Schönbrunn zoo in Vienna: for the third time in a row a cuddly double pack of white-nosed bears. The twins, a boy and a girl, were born in mid-May. They have now left the nest and are exploring the entire interior. Cuddling with mom and siblings and sleeping are still the favorite pastimes.
The two cubs were born blind and deaf in mid-May and were nursed and cared for by their mother in the nest for the first few weeks. “Meanwhile, the approximately six-week-old twins, a male and a female, have left their safe nest and are on the road throughout the indoor enclosure. The two currently spend most of the day sleeping next to their mother,” said zookeeper Michaela Hoffmann.
“We are delighted that our coatis pair has successfully produced offspring several times in a row and that we can make an important contribution to the conservation of the species,” said zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck.
The coatis are actually at home in Central and South America, they belong to the small bears and are active during the day and like to climb. On the menu are both plant foods and meat. Coatis have a long tail and a snout-like nose, which they use to search for worms, insects, and fruit.
