The costs of living in Austria rose again in April 2025. According to Statistics Austria, inflation – ie the average price increase compared to the previous year – was 3.1 percent. That is slightly more than in March.
Electricity, rental prices and holiday trips became particularly expensive. In April, electricity even cost more than a third more than a year ago. The most important reason for this is the end of the Remrem of the Electricity Prize and Higher Costs. Rental prices also rose – with a good 4 percent compared to the previous year.
If you wanted to travel in April, you had to pay considerably more for package trips. The reason: the Easter holidays fell in April of this year, which increased the prices for vacation offers.
But there is also good news
Restaurant and hotel visits also became noticeably more expensive, just like many leisure activities. On average, food was more expensive. Coffee and candy in particular were hard.
But there is also good news: fuels such as gasoline and diesel became cheaper. This has limited the price increase of other products.
The bottom line is that living, energy and holiday journeys are the largest price drivers. If you go shopping regularly, you will particularly notice inflation – the daily purchase is 4.6 percent more expensive than a year ago.
