As part of the Computex Computer Mass in Taiwan, Nvidia Baas Jensen Huang described the American export controls for AI chips to China as a failure.
The market share of NVIDIA in China fell from 95 percent at the start of the term of office of former US President Joe Biden to 50 percent, said that the manager, who leads the world’s largest supplier of powerful processors for artificial intelligence (AI).
“All in all, export check was a failure,” Huang said for an audience at the fair. The American sales ban for advanced AI chips to China has forced the companies there to buy semiconductors from Chinese developers such as Huawei and at the same time bringing China to aggressively investing in the establishment of a supply chain that is not dependent on manufacturers outside the country.
Due to the repeated American export restrictions for high technology to China, Nvidia had recently warned about depreciation with a volume of $ 5.5 billion (4.89 billion euros). In the past, the company has developed various special variants of its AI chips for the People’s Republic, which did not fall under the appropriate American embargo. After each tightening of the American regulations, the products had to be adjusted accordingly. According to a media report, a closed version of the current flagship chip “Blackwell” should be available in June, which can be exported in accordance with the current requirements. With its embargo, the United States wants to inhibit the economic and technological rise in China.
Beijing does not only want to focus Washington
After the recently published guideline of the United States, China threatened with consequences with warnings for the use of computer chips from China. The Chinese Ministry of Trade said on Wednesday that it has reserved legal action for those who participated in the implementation of the “discriminatory and restrictive measures” against Chinese companies proposed by the US.
China urges the United States to comply with the international economic and trade rules and to respect the rights of other countries to scientific and technological development, a ministry spokesperson said in a statement. The United States had published a directive last week that states that American companies were dangerous to violate export controls if they used ASCend Ki chips from the Huawei Company based in Shenzhen
