Federal President Alexander van der Bellen was received on Thursday by the Japanese emperor Naruhito in Tokyo. That was a “great honor,” said the politician, who had previously met Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
Van der Bellen spoke with Ishiba about the economic cooperation between the two countries and the world view in Osaka. “Our business mission is in full swing. With the opening of an economic forum we were able to lay the foundation for strong partnerships in the Asian space,” Van der Bellen said in a video. The entrepreneurs of Austria are “valuable and reliable partners for shops with long -term” and “smart spirits full of broken ideas”.
The 150-person business delegation led by Van der Bellen, Minister of Economy Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (ÖVP) and vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce Philipp Gady had started to Japan on Tuesday. It opens the Austrian pavilion on Friday at the World Exhibition Expo 2025, in which Kiko crown princess of Akishino also participates.
Planned agreement
According to the Austrian Ministry of Economic Affairs, an agreement must be signed with the Japanese to work together in areas such as research and hydrogen technology. In 2023 the bilateral trade volume was 4.6 billion euros. About 170 Japanese companies are active in Austria, which together have around 5000 employees. These are mainly active in research.
