While the debate over a possible ceiling on electricity prices has sparked controversy in recent days, especially within the People’s Party, the federal government now appears to be adopting concrete proposals from experts. According to a media report, Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment Leonore Gewessler (Greens) is already working out details for a ceiling for electricity prices.
Specifically, this is the proposal made on Sunday by WIFO chief Gabriel Felbermayr, as the ministry confirmed to “Puls 24”. Specifically, the economic researcher was thinking of making a certain quota of electricity (about 80 percent) available to households free of charge – more consumption would then be settled with the current market price.
In this way it can also be achieved that people save more energy and thus the consequences of possible bottlenecks in the supply are mitigated, according to Felbermayr. He received much encouragement from many experts for his progress.
“Help comes to households”
In any case, Gewessler was open to the suggestion compared to “Puls 24”: “The aid goes to the households – not to big companies from abroad. But those who waste energy are not rewarded for it,” she sees two advantages in the idea. You have therefore also commissioned the experts from the department to work out the relevant details.
But according to the minister, there is no way out of the energy crisis without a European initiative. Since the electricity market is a “common market”, it also needs “uniform regulation”, she warned not to do it alone on the sensitive issue: “Only a European solution can and will work here.”
