Johnson blocks opposition vote of no confidence

Labor leader Keir Starmer gives legitimacy to Johnson’s interim mandate with opportunistic motion

Acting UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has informed opposition leader Keir Starmer that his government will not allow parliamentary time next Wednesday to pass a no-confidence vote against the government and the Prime Minister in the House. of the House of Commons. Johnson is expected to leave his position in September.

The convention is that in the House of Commons priority is given to motions of censure against the government. They can also be filed against the Prime Minister or against one of the members of his cabinet, but in this case they do not take precedence and the opposition could be forced to wait for a specific day devoted to discussing their initiatives.

Johnson announced last Thursday that he will leave his position as leader of the Conservative Party when the internal election process ends on September 5. Conservative votes then demanded that he leave Downing Street immediately, but the waters have calmed down and attention has shifted to the election battle between the candidates to succeed him.

Labor Starmer submitted the motion for a vote in the House of Representatives on Wednesday. He justified it as a tool that would allow him to denounce the conservative group for “concluding that Johnson is not fit for the head of government and letting him stay for weeks.”

Downing Street responded to the motion by explaining the conventions and announcing that it would accept a vote of no confidence against the government. The Conservative faction might reject it, so as not to change the transition. Starmer is valued more than any candidate to succeed Johnson, except former Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak, according to a poll.
