Authorities intervened – cats and dogs overgrown in the littered yard

Date:

In the eastern Styrian market town of Hartmannsdorf, two dogs and ten cats were rescued from conditions that stunned observers. Some of the animals lived in a wooden hut full of garbage, but also in a small space in the basement. Now the authorities intervened.

After an anonymous report, two patrols from the Markt Hartmannsdorf and St. Margarethen police stations drove to a building in the Oed district on Tuesday morning. An official veterinarian was also on site, as well as other representatives of the Weiz district, the active animal protection and the fire brigade of Markt Hartmannsdorf.

Ten cats rescued from a wooden shed
When combing the heavily polluted site, several cats were found locked in a garden shed. All windows and doors were closed, so that hardly any oxygen could get in. s
clean water was absent, as was daylight. There was garbage, feces and urine everywhere. The animal rescue rescued ten cats, who reacted extremely scared.

Blocked access to basement
Adjacent to the basement of the apartment building was an underground concrete extension, from which the barking of a dog could be heard. The entrance door to the basement was blocked with numerous objects. In the stuffy room in the dark sat a very frightened German Shepherd.

The fire brigade also had to force the front door because another dog could be heard inside and could be seen through a hole in the door. This second sheepdog was also caught with the help of a fishing pole.

Owner was overwhelmed
The rescued animals were taken to Noah’s Ark in Graz. The 62-year-old pet owner may have been overwhelmed by the care and supervision. She is at the public prosecutor’s office in Graz on suspicion of animal cruelty.
