An equestrian statue of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has collapsed after less than two years. On Thursday evening, the 2.70 meter high, life-size sculpture collapsed in Etsdorf, Bavaria, as artist Wilhelm Koch reported: “Unfortunately, 3D concrete printing at the time was not very durable and unsuitable for outdoor use.”
The statue, weighing one and a half tons, had already suffered considerable damage in the spring. The horse’s head was broken off and one of the CDU politician’s hands fell off. The equestrian statue was then reassembled and renovated.
Total loss
According to Koch, it made a good visual impression. After the first small cracks in recent days, it was now a total loss. “Apparently the equestrian statue could no longer withstand the internal pressure and load, despite all efforts to save it,” the artist said.
The statue was unveiled in October 2021 in the Etsdorf Temple Museum – Merkel was still head of government in Berlin at the time. The museum regularly hosts exhibitions and other cultural events. Merkel was depicted in the image “in her typical trouser suit, her hands shaped in the Merkel diamond,” as the artist put it.
