From March 2026 the Westbahn will be the route from Vienna to Villach ten times from March 2026. Four stops in Carinthia are fixed. The Klopeiner See is also integrated.
“We will stop in Carinthia every day, there are five journeys in each direction,” explains Westbahn Board spokesperson Thomas Posch. “In addition to Villach, Pörtschach and Klagenfurt, also in Kühnsdorf.” This frequency will be possible with three smile sets from the train producer Stadler from March 2026.
“What was promised many years ago is now being saved. The stop in Kühnsdorf worked because we found the right partners at the right time,” emphasizes Sebastian Schuschnig. “This is an upgrade of the Südbahn. The Koralbahn will play a central role in Austria.” In the timetable, the value was placed on the comfort of day guests and the daily edges are also supplied.
The trips start at 5.08 am in Villach and at 6.15 am in Vienna, in the evening the last train runs in Villach at 6:00 pm. In Vienna at 6.15 pm “From Graz you are in Kühnsdorf within 33 minutes”, Posch explains.
For the Westbahn, the new route is the “first new direction,” said board member Marco Ramsbacher: “As a resident of Carinthia this is very happy. We are pioneers, showing that railway traffic works as the first -class and reliable.” He mainly refers to the free chair reservations, even if you have the climate.
The Revival for Zuid -Karinthia
But the project is not just a milestone for the private railway company. “This is very important for the Zuid -Carinthia region, the 40,000 people who live here. There are also cuts in our landscape, so it’s a good thing,” emphasizes the mayor of Galliezien, Hannes Mak. “This experience important summer tourism on Lake Klopein generally brings an economic revival.” The mayor thanks the Westbahn and the country, clarifies: “Our perseverance has paid off.”
With the initiative of the Westbahn, the pressure on ÖBB is growing to attend a stop in Kühnsdorf – state councilor Sebastian Schuschnig is optimistic.
