Life remains expensive – inflation in May fell at least three percent

Inflation fell by 0.1 percent in May. Consumers had to pay on average three percent more compared to the same period in the previous year. The most important factors for inflation remain the prices for apartment, water and energy.

“We again see the strongest price bullet in the year in electricity, whereby the effect on inflation of the price falls in other energy sources such as gas, heating oil, solid fuels and fuels was largely compensated”, the specialized statistics of the Statistics Austria, Thomas Burg, is quoted in an broadcast.

Energy remains a problem
Electricity has become 36.2 percent more expensive compared to May 2024. The price of heating oil fell by 13.1 percent. In the case of gas it was a decrease of nine percent, with solid fuels minus 7.8 percent. Characteristics became 9.1 percent cheaper in the year. Rental prices (including new rent) increased by 4.1 percent in the same period.

In the catering trade, prices rose on average by 5.8 percent. Accommodation services became 3.9 percent more expensive – however, the dynamics, after 5.7 percent in April, decreased considerably. Food and non -alcoholic drinks became 3.5 percent more expensive.
