Everyone who lives in Austria pays an exorbitant high electricity price. According to the comparison portal Verivox, Austria is only behind seven other countries in the ranking of the Verivox -comparison portal Verivox with an average price of 36.9 cents per kilowatt hour.
The most expensive is the island state of Bermuda with the equivalent of 41.97 cents. The electricity is only more expensive than in Austria in Denmark, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, the Cayman Islands and Great Britain.

The local energy price index (EPI) rose by 1.3 percent in the year, although this is only due to the development of electricity price, because households paid 36.2 percent more than a year earlier in May. The electricity price received 0.6 percent compared to April. Because the electricity price was no longer supported this year and the network costs were increased, the electricity price increased accordingly
The government wants to respond now
According to the energy agency, the enormous increase of 36.2 percent can be justified. That should be better in the future. The federal government had announced an agreement on the first steps for an energy reform on Whit Monday. “With the New Electricity Industry Act (ELWG) the largest energy reform is launched for two decades,” said the federal chancellery. The new law brings “more honesty, less bureaucracy and cheaper electricity”. A social rate must be introduced for people who are at risk of poverty.
The legislative package entails clear rules, which means, among other things: “If wholesale prices fall, the providers will have to pass this legally to customers in the future,” the federal government assures. The goal is to lower network costs. Households and companies would get more options for directly generating, sharing or acting.
