From 2027, green steel must be produced in the Donawitz Voetalpine factory. The new system is still a huge construction site-the same applies to the necessary food. For this alone, no less than 118 million euros are invested.
Five percent of the emissions from the whole of Austria should decrease if the first two electrically legant stoves in the SteelWorks Linz and Leoben-DonaWitz Conventional blast furnaces Footstalpine replace from 2027. Much renewable energy is required for the production of the green steel, the food is therefore crucial.
In Leoben alone, a construction project of 118 million euros has been carried out since April 2024, in which the APG (Austrian Power Grid) is responsible. Right next to the stull plant-spectacularly built in a slope — a new substation, the existing substation in Hessenberg will be expanded and there are approximately seven kilometers of line construction. This generally ensures regional energy supply. A local inspection now emphasized that the construction work planned by the autumn 2026 is entirely on schedule.
Various projects are planned near the Staalfabriek to create green electricity. The Energy Styria wants a new Murpower factory. The state government (as in Kapfenberg) knew the way to build a new PV -large system (on 31.1 hectares) in an earlier landfill. And wind turbines in the neighborhood are at least one vision.
