In 2024, the recession also manifested itself in the Austria exportnation in the foreign trade of the individual federal states.
Exports in the state of the industrial country of Austria broke the strongest with a decrease of 11.1 percent. With a minus of 11.7 percent in Vienna, import had the most violent decline. In seven of the nine countries, both imports and exports have affected, published on Tuesday, provisional data from Statistics Austria.
Last year, the Austrian Buitenhandel showed a minus of 6.7 percent in import to EUR 189.26 billion and a decrease from 4.9 percent for export to around 191 billion euros. The values of 2022 were also undermined in 2024. While importing for the third year in a row, there was an increase in exports of 2023 in 2023.
According to countries, exports only grew in Tyrol in 2024. It was at least 2 percent or 330 million euros compared to 2023. There were only more imports in Burgenland. There was a slight increase of 0.3 percent or around 10 million euros here.
Everywhere else there were strong falls in both import and export. Upper Austria (minus 11.1 percent or minus EUR 6.03 billion) placed the largest export decrease, followed by Lager Austria (minus 5.4 percent or minus 1.63 billion euros) and Salzburg (minus 6.2 percent or minus 0.87 billion euros).
Five countries registered commercial balance surplus
For imports, the falls in Vienna (minus 11.7 percent or minus 6.23 billion euros) and in Tyrol (minus 10.2 percent or minus 1.65 billion euros) were double digits. This was followed by Upper Austria with a minus of 5.8 percent (minus 2.25 billion euros).
Due to the decreases on both sides, ie both a few and exports, five federal states reached a commercial balance surplus in 2024- so they were with a higher value than was introduced. Upper Austria reached the highest surplus with EUR 11.83 billion, followed by Styria with EUR 7.34 billion and Vorarlberg with EUR 3.89 billion. All three countries are considered so with a strong industry. Vienna registered the clearest passive at EUR 16.10 billion, a large city of services.
Most exports to Bovenste Austria, most import to Vienna
Upper Austria is responsible for a quarter of exports from Austria (25.2 percent). This is followed by Vienna (16.2 percent), Lower Austria (15 percent) and Styria (14.8 percent). It is imported to Vienna by almost a quarter (24.8 percent), followed by Upper Austria (19.2 percent), lower Austria (17.4 percent) and Styria (11.1 percent).
