VORARLBERG BALANCE – The emission of greenhouse gases has been considerably reduced since 2003

Date:

The emissions of carbon dioxide & Co. have been reduced by no less than 24 percent in Vorarlberg since the beginning of the energy autonomy process, despite the population growth and economic flowering.

Every year the data and figures on the long road to Energy Autonomy 2050 are examined exactly. “The current monitoring report shows that the course has been good and must be maintained in the future,” said Governor Markus Wallner (ÖVP) on the Persfoyer on Tuesday.

The bottom line is that it is not easy to achieve the goals. After all, the population has grown with 47,000 people (13 percent). And doubling economic performance (GDP was increased by 97 percent) also complicates.

Renewable share at 95 percent
As in previous years, there are some positive figures in the monitoring report: 48 percent can be covered for example by energy consumption in Vorarlberg from domestic energy sources. The share of renewable energy sources in food was 95 percent. The crucial part again delivered the hydroelectric power stations, but also photovoltaic and biomass worked on the good result. In the field of photovoltaisches, the intermediate destination of 330 Megawatts was specified for 2030 five years earlier than planned.

On the other hand, one is not on its way in the field of final energy: in the current balance year, 9056 Gigawatt – hours of Eindergie were used – that is only two percent less than in the base year 2005. The largest “energy drivers” are buildings (49 percent) and industry (27 percent). The most important energy sources are electricity (29 percent), fuel (23 percent) and gas (21 percent).

It looks a bit better when reducing greenhouse gases. In 2024, 1.83 million tonnes of CO2 was deported – at least 24 percent less than in 2005. The construction sector is primarily responsible for the decline. The use of fossil fuels (heating oil and natural gas) has fallen considerably here.

Traffic remains a problem child
The emission decrease in traffic is due to the reduced diesel sale of heavy commercial vehicles. Mobility – This is where most greenhouse gases are caused by 43 percent – remains on the way to the autonomy of 2050 Energy.

Because a lot has changed since the start of the process in 2003, the country’s energy strategy must be subjected to an update. For example, developments in the energy market, such as the growing need for storage capacities of electricity or changed legal requirements must be taken into account.
