The shortage of skilled workers is greater than ever, while “new work models” are gaining traction in the working world. In short, it’s about a new concept of humanity: “People are not machines that you can squeeze out,” says Nicole Thurn, journalist and founder of the online magazine “New Work Stories” – in the show “Krone LIVE” with Jana Pasching .
This is also apparent from the old diction of work and management or human resources: “They are all words that reduce people to their performance. People are central to New Ways of Working, with their emotions, needs and interests.” The roles are reversed: “The employer can now apply to the employee.”
“Different requirements than before”
The search for meaning in one’s own work is increasing. Given rising inflation and price increases, it seems contradictory at first glance that many now want to quit or change jobs. “A lot of people think that nothing is fixed in life, so I can immediately go down the road I really want to go,” says Thurn. Mental stress has increased enormously: “People are also considering changing jobs because they no longer want to accept the working conditions and also set different requirements than before.” There are many opportunities for companies to invest in employees. “But you just have to take money in your hands.”
The shortage of skilled labor is not only an issue since today, the corona pandemic has only exacerbated the problem: “In my opinion, the shortage of skilled labor in the tourism industry is homemade,” says the journalist. The industry generally has an image problem. Those who have switched are realizing that they prefer to stay in the new industry because the working conditions are better. “The pandemic could also have been used to create more attractive jobs for workers.” But there are also many pioneers, especially in tourism, who have shown that things can be done differently.
According to Thurn, the future of the working world will move towards greater flexibility, and it will be about allowing people more self-determination.
