With the entry into force of the new traffic law in 2022, several changes have been made for motorists to use helmets or speed limits
Things will be different on the road this summer, because with the entry into force of the new traffic law, there are several changes that the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has implemented in its regulations and in the sanctions it imposes. As for the motorcycles, it’s a series of quite significant changes that affect speed, use of electronic devices, or penalties if you break the regulations.
While most of the new features have been implemented for all types of vehicles, drivers need to be aware of the impact these DGT changes will have on them. The new traffic law was launched on March 21 and includes new rules to protect the environment and reduce pollution, regularize the autonomous vehicle and of course bet on road safety with stricter penalties, which now means more points lost from the driving license. From now on you will have to take all these new features into account when using the engine. These are all the new regulations, changes and novelties in the regulations of the DGT and the sanctions you want to know if you have a motorcycle and are going to travel with it in the summer.
This dangerous behavior was already a penalty, but it increases the points that can be taken from you if you are caught with your mobile in your hand while driving the car or motorcycle. Go from 3 to 6 points if you use cell phones. A measure that maintains the same fine of 200 euros. In this way, the aim is to reduce road deaths, as distraction behind the wheel has been the leading cause of fatal crashes since 2016, according to Traffic.
The DGT focuses on the basic security elements as worrying data continues to be released with a very simple gesture that saves lives. In the case of four-wheel vehicles, an estimated 1 in 4 road deaths still do not use a seat belt. If from now on the driver of the motorcycle and his companion do not wear the helmet or wear it incorrectly, this will cost them the loss of 4 points (previously there were 3) and a fine of 200 euros. The same goes for child seats, popularly known as baby seats.
Until now, passenger cars and motorcycles were allowed to exceed the speed limit of 20 km/h to overtake other vehicles on conventional roads. The DGT considers this maneuver risky and therefore justifies the new rule, which has become one of the most controversial of the 50 novelties in the new traffic law.
As a measure to reduce the environmental impact of cars and motorcycles, the number of points lost for throwing objects that can cause fire and accidents is increased. If you throw a cigarette butt while riding the motorcycle, they take 6 points away from you (3 points earlier), and you also get a 500 euro fine.
An important change that must also be met this summer is the 0 alcohol rate for moped riders with an AM and A1 driving license, scooters and bicycles under the age of 18. Traffic believes it is “logical and reasonable” to introduce this new rule, as if the sale of alcohol is banned at that age, it should be similarly adapted to driving.
It is already allowed to use certified or approved wireless devices incorporated into the helmet when making phone calls. Traffic makes it clear that it should only be used for communication or navigation purposes if you have a motorcycle or moped.
