The US Senate on Wednesday passed a bill to support billions of dollars in US semiconductor manufacturing. The deputies voted in the final vote for the so-called chip law by 64 to 33 votes. The stated goal of US President Joe Biden is to strengthen competitiveness vis-à-vis China and other countries.
The law will lower prices, create jobs “and — most importantly — reduce our reliance on imported chips,” Biden said Wednesday. In the course of the week, the House of Representatives will vote on it, according to spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi, approval is certain.
Semiconductors are considered the pacesetters of the modern technology world and can be found almost everywhere today, for example in smartphones, computers, cars or medical devices. A shortage of semiconductors had led to price increases and supply chain problems in many industries during the corona pandemic.
The law is also about reducing dependence on chip manufacturing in Asia. Especially in Taiwan there are large production capacities. Given the tensions with China, US politicians are concerned about security of supply.
