In an emotional speech, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres accused the world’s major oil and gas companies of “grotesque greed”: “It is immoral that oil and gas companies are making record profits from this energy crisis at the expense of the poorest people and societies — too high costs for the climate.”
Governments around the world must ensure that the excessive profits made during the crisis as a result of the war in Ukraine are taxed, the UN chief demands. Governments should use the taxes collected to support the most vulnerable.
Many developing countries are drowning in debt, have no access to financing and are on the brink, the Portuguese said. Greed punishes the poorest and destroys “our only common home”.
