Strike averted – Agreement: more wages for ground staff Lufthansa

Date:

German AUA parent Lufthansa and union ver.di have reached an agreement on a pay rise for the airline’s approximately 20,000 employees on the ground. Significant salary increases have been agreed, which are disproportionately high for the lower salary scales. At Lufthansa, there will therefore be no new strike by employees at check-in or when handling aircraft.

The collective agreement has a term of 18 months. It provides for salary increases of at least 325 euros plus a further increase of 2.5 percent for the approximately 20,000 employees.

A one-day strike had led to more than 1,000 flight cancellations at Lufthansa’s Frankfurt and Munich hubs in the past week. And that in the middle of the high season, which already demands a lot of patience from travelers due to disruptions to airport operations due to staff shortages in Europe.

After two years of exemption due to the Corona crisis, the agreement provides for a wage increase of 200 euros per month from July 1, 2022. From January 1, 2023, wages will increase by 2.5 percent and from July 1, 2023 by another 2.5 percent.

Ver.di negotiator Christine Behle praised the result, which was not made dependent on Lufthansa’s profits. She said: “The result includes an inflation adjustment and, in addition, a real wage increase. It was important for us to achieve this real balance to protect workers in this economically difficult situation.”

Lufthansa Chief Human Resources Officer Michael Niggemann was confident that he could now come to an agreement with the pilots. About the ground crew degree, he said: “It was important for us to pay disproportionate attention to the lower and middle income groups. In this way we meet our social responsibility for our employees and we ensure our attractiveness as an employer.”
