The Verdi union has again called on workers at the Amazon distribution center in Bad Hersfeld to strike. The strike that started Friday night is intended to pressure management for higher wages, the union announced in Frankfurt on Friday. The strike should also include Saturday.
Verdi has been trying unsuccessfully for years to enforce the collective labor agreement for the mail order and retail trade with the American group or to conclude its own rate. Instead, Amazon operates its own reward system. According to Verdi, the board has now stated at company meetings that a “wage-setting process” will take place at the end of August.
“During company meetings, it was repeatedly said that rising costs are a heavy burden for many workers,” union secretary Mechthild Middeke said in a statement. “A colleague briefly summed it up: If Amazon makes membership 28 percent more expensive for Prime customers and justifies it with rising costs, then we have these rising costs and we want compensation for it.”
According to the company, all employees in logistics pay at least 12 euros per hour plus extras. Last year, an increase to “at least 12.50 euros gross” was announced for the autumn of this year, a spokesperson explained. After 12 and 24 months of service, the salary is automatically increased.
