For the first time since the resumption of agricultural exports across the Black Sea, a freighter loaded with wheat left Ukraine on Friday. The Sormowsky (pictured above) left the port of Chornomorsk with more than 3,000 tons of grain on board and is headed for northwestern Turkey, the defense ministry in Ankara said.
For example, a ship loaded with 60,000 tons of maize left another Ukrainian port on Friday. This means that 14 ships have left Ukrainian ports since the Russia-Ukraine agreement brokered by Turkey and the United Nations.
bottlenecks in poorer countries
In contrast to the current supply of wheat, the ships have until now mainly been loaded with grain for animal feed or for energy generation. In Ukraine, millions of tons of grain have been trapped in the ports of the Black Sea since the Russian attack at the end of February, leading to rising prices and shortages, especially in poorer countries.
As a result of the Russian war of aggression, all grain exports from Ukraine from its Black Sea ports have been blocked in recent months, contributing to a global food crisis. Recently, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN agreed on an agreement to break the blockade.
