Iran’s largest car manufacturer, Iran Khodro, wants to focus more on Russia in the future. “We will pay special attention to the Russian market and we are also considering cooperation with Russian investors,” company chief Mehdi Chatibi said on Sunday. “We have had good negotiations with Moscow. The Russian market with its capabilities will be one of our key markets.”
Iran Khodro’s vice president, Kianush Purmojib, told AFP the company plans to produce significantly more vehicles and increase exports from less than 20,000 per year to 100,000. Azerbaijan, Oman and Iraq are interesting markets, but “Of course Russia is the most important in terms of volume,” he said.
Both countries are affected by Western sanctions. Tehran and Moscow have therefore expanded their cooperation in important areas. In July, Russian President Vladimir Putin traveled to Tehran to meet his counterpart Ebrahim Raisi and Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to Iranian media reports, Iran Khodro last did important business with Russia between 2007 and 2009. According to company boss Chatibi, exports there should start again this year.
