Virtually full employment is actually a cause for rejoicing regarding the Tyrolean labor market, but the lack of skilled workers everywhere you look is a cause for concern. The state is now trying to take countermeasures and presented the strategy “Tyrolean labor market 2030”.
In Tyrol there is almost full employment, there are hardly any unemployed. At the same time, there is a lack of staff – in almost all sectors. Almost a year ago, the state started working on a strategy to solve this problem on the initiative of the responsible LR Beate Palfrader together with economic LR Anton Mattle, Chamber of Commerce and Labour, AMS and union. The “Tirol 2030 Job Fair” was presented on Tuesday.
Women and young people in the part-time “trap”
“It is worrying,” explains Palfrader, “that Austria has the third highest percentage of part-time work in the EU.” Among them are many women who, in addition to working, raise children, take care of the household and take care of relatives . But younger people often prefer fewer weekly hours. “You cannot deny the willingness of the young people to perform,” said Tyrolean AK chairman Erwin Zangerl, “but their outlook on the future is not rosy.”
A lack of opportunities to own a home and a pension that was always said there would be nothing left for them anyway. So why put work first? “It used to be: in place, ready, go! Today it is: Ready, stable, stable!”
21 action areas defined
But the labor market cannot be filled only with women and boys. The birth rate is – certainly in comparison with the baby boom generation – simply too low. “We need more babies or immigration,” Palfrader summed up briefly. A total of three strategic areas have now been developed – promotion of employment, training and retraining, improvement of participation opportunities – nine targets have been set and 21 areas for action defined.
Some cornerstones are, for example, improving work-family compatibility and dismantling role models to get more women into full-time employment, and facilitating access to the “Red-White-Red Card”. In addition, from 1 September 2022, students will receive a total of 200 euros extra per month instead of 100 euros during their apprenticeship.
